Copper

Element: Copper (Cu)

Where’s it mined: Most of the world’s supply of copper is mined in Chile, which produced an estimated 5.6 million metric tons of copper in 2021.

Where is it mainly manufactured? The world's largest consumer of refined copper in 2020 was China. In that year, China consumed a 54 percent share of the total global copper consumption volume.

What’s it mainly used for: Copper is highly conductive, so used in electric generators, household/car electrical wiring, and the wires in appliances, computers, lights, motors, telephone cables, radios and TVs.

How much would you find in a laptop: Approximately 0.3 – 0.5kg of copper is used in the average laptop.

How does the use of lithium affect the environment? Copper mining has resulted in extensive air and water pollution, affecting local communities living near mining sites. Not only does this affect people’s health, water pollution threatens agricultural practices and habitats.

How can we limit the impact on the environment? Recycling copper is crucial to limit the impact on the environment caused by mining. Users should aim to purchase aim to purchase from ethical and sustainable supply chains.

How is it recycled? Copper simply needs to be melted down, and re-cast. Smelters will undertake a check analysis to test the quality and composition before it is re-cast.

When will we run out: Because copper is easily recyclable, it is unlikely we will run out. But the demand for copper is expected to increase by 350% by 2050, so if recycling does not keep up then shortages could affect supply in approximately 50 years time.
